Dear Theresa Snell & Those Above

Dear Theresa Snell

The following is an open letter signed by all those members of staff in agreement with what I write. The Midland Hotel is an imperfect icon but holds a sovereign place in the hearts of the Northerners who have grown up around it, in awe of it and those visitors who have experienced our great Manchester using this hotel.

We understand the hotel is a business and currently at a loss, however the increasing cuts are not only impacting the guest experience, but the attention of those key team members with a real passion for service and who want to see this incredible hotel succeed. Currently your hotel’s standards rely entirely on team members working extra hours which are now completely unpaid and otherwise unrewarded, creating a very anti-above and beyond culture. This labour is sustained only by the love and faith given to this amazing hotel by those who love it. They will not work continue to unrewarded and you are lucky that they have this faith and love in the hotel to begin with. It is not an unlimited resource to take for granted. You are on the verge of losing your key workers.

We understand cuts need to be made to keep the business alive, but all we ask is for a more open conversation about our guests needs and how we can help each other. This ‘create policy’-‘execute policy’ with zero feedback from us (the customer facing staff) relationship is not working and is doomed without the effort it required from your end. You need to understand the hotel from our staff and guests perspective.

This letter is not the first warning of collapse, but one forced from us before final collapse of the team who have cared dearly for the hotel and its guests. We talk to eachother all day every day and we’re beyond bloody tired of this, in fact we’re burnt out beyond belief. Work is supposed to be exciting for those who care about their jobs, and offer opportunities of a future. This business offers an impossible moral challenge where you want all the service for no cost or reward to your dedicated team.We want to work together with our GM to reliably provide the Midland Experience to all our valued guests who save their hard earned money for time off work at the Midland Hotel. We want your help to make this happen, we do not want an enemy at the helm.

Honorably and Sincerely,The Worker Bees of the Midland Hotel

PS. We are the ones who care.
